Daily average maximum air temperatures
January
Across the Isle of Wight, southern Hampshire, Dorset and south Wiltshire the average is 7.5C and 5C or 6C elsewhere.
February
In coastal areas the daily maximum is about 8C and generally about 7.5C elsewhere. However, on the Wiltshire and Berkshire Downs the maximum is likely to be around 6C
March
Coastal districts, the New Forest, central Hampshire and east Dorset and the Isle of Wight, the maximum temperature is around 10C or 11C. Elsewhere expect 9C
April
Along the Hampshire coast and the Isle of Wight the maximum can reach an average of 13C and 11.5C to 12C elsewhere.
May
Maximum temperatures can vary widely across the region from 16C over much of Hampshire and Dorset to a degree or so lower in Wiltshire and Berkshire.
June
Generally about 19C but a little lower in the extreme north of the region.
July
The warmest month of the year with an average maximum of 21C quite widely across the region. However, in sheltered parts of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight the mercury can average at 22C or even 23C.
August
Maximum temperatures are pretty uniform this month with an average of 19C to 21C.
September
Generally around 18C but in some northern and western parts of the region the daily maximum is a degree or so lower.
October
The average is 14C but in the extreme north of Wiltshire and Berkshire 12C or 13C is the norm.
November
Highest daily maximum temperatures are likely along the coastal belt where 10C or 11C is possible. Further inland 9.5C is likely.
December
Coastal areas fare best with a maximum of 8.5C or 9C. Inland 7C can be expected.
Average minimum air temperatures
January
Along the Hampshire and Dorset coastline 3C or 4C is likely but further inland 2C and in the extreme north of the region 0C or 1C.
February
Coastal districts are likely to be the warmest with lows of around 2C or 3C. Inland 0C or 1C
March
Inland areas are the coldest with minimums of around 2Cor 3C. Coastal districts experience lows of about 4C.
April
The Dorset and Hampshire coasts along with the Isle of Wight are the warmest with overnight lows around 5C. Inland 3C or 4C can be expected.
May
The Isle of Wight and coastal areas usually experience minimums of about 8C. However, inland the temperatures fall to about 6C or 7C and on the Malborough Downs and in Berkshire the average air temperature falls to around 5C.
June
Expect minimums of about 10C along the extreme coastline and over the Isle of Wight, 9C or 10C, across inland Dorset, Hampshire and south Wiltshire. And 8C or 9C in central and northern Wiltshire and also Berkshire.
July
Generally, the average minimum is around 11C but slightly higher in the Solent and Isle of Wight areas.
August
Temperatures are fairly uniform with minimums of about 11C or 12C but can fall no lower than 13C along the coast and the Isle of Wight.
September
North Wiltshire, Berkshire and north Hampshire experience the coldest nights this month with average lows of 8C. Remaining areas of the region can expect lows of 9C or even 10C – particularly along the coast.
October
Generally a low of around 6C but the monthly minimum is usually about 8C or 9C over the Isle of Wight, Southampton Water and Bournemouth areas.
November
Minimum temperatures range from 4C or 5C along the coast to 2C or 4C elsewhere.
December
There is a marked decrease in minimum temperatures between the coastline and far north of the region – ranging from 4C over the Isle of Wight and cities along the Solent to 1.5C in Berkshire, Wiltshire and central and northern parts of Hampshire.
